11 orthodox churches have been build in the rocks, from top to down, from outside to inside...

Real masterpieces. The legend says that King Lalibela made the churches himself. He digged during day time and angels continued the work during the night...

Pilgrims from Jerusalem arrived in Lalibela and wanted to die there, some houndreds years ago...surprisingly well preserved !
