From El Calafate to the north - On the road Ruta 40 - Oct 2006

Once again we take the famous Ruta 40 which was the way followed by che Guevara during his trip in south america.

We started on the 40 since the chile.

We spend the night in the garden of  a farm. The conditions for life are not always easy for the small estancia... When Daniel takes a picture of the toilet, the owner appears immediately. 'What are you doing ? '. Daniel is ashamed and starts to give funny explanations ...Before to leave the farm, Jose guides us in his house. It is really like a museum. The children love it.

Later on, We meet Roland and Claude, 2 french guys with a land rover defender coming from the North. It is the time to discuss aboutr itineraries and equipment ...

On the road to the North , the good weather has came back ...

Therefore the landscapes are nicer ... It looks like a desert here and we see nearly nobody on the way ...

We visit the Cuevas de Los Manos. It is a prehistorical site nested in a superb canyon.  We can see there the negative hand print made by men. Most of the prints have been made between 9000 and 7000 years before christus.

Leaving bajo Caracolles, we meet again James seen in Ushuaia. He just has a puncture. He is exhausted ... We offer him a coca-cola and we start to discuss together. He is engineer, and works for ... land rover. We propose him a lift to the next village but after having hesitated, he refuses even if he is exhausted. Catherine and I are really impressed by such a strong character ...

A little bit further, we stop in a bar-hotel in the middle of nowhere. A gaucho has let his horse outside and drinks along the bar. When we go in, we start the discusssion with the boss who is very proud to show us the pictures of many creasy travellers who has visited him.

We take the direction of the city of Perito Moreno, on the road 40. On the way, the landscape is beautiful, with many canyons, ... We have decided to stop there for two days. The time to make some maintenance and to update the website. The first night, a motobiker arrives on a bike registered in Alaska. At first we thought that he looks as an indian with long black hairs. But Daniel looks at him and thinks that he is Japanese. ' Where are you from ?' 'Japan'. Shusuke is Japanese. He is traveling alone from Alsaka to Ushuaia on a Yamaha 225 cc. On the evening, we borrow him our computer as we have a wi-fi connection here by chance and then after we start discussing and drinking a beer together. He tells us about his trip and a bad experience in Costa Rica. We exchange informations about the roads for the future as he goes to the south and we go to the North. The day after, he offers to our children a very interesting book about 'Origami'. The children are extremely happy ...
